Happy Halloween !
Halloween is not much of a festival in Malaysia. Since we are in the mood of holiday series, no harm add another reason to be festive.
Halloween comes from “All-hallow-even”, meaning the evening before “All-hallow-day” (All Saints Day). It was a Catholic feast with a pagan origins. It was probably part of the Celtic belief. It is celebrated together with Celtic holiday known Samhain (sow-en) on October 31. The day marks the end of summer, which implies the beginning of darkness.
Halloween is also related to “Punkie Night” which is observed on the last Thursday in October. On this night, hollowed out pumpkin was used as lantern. Children went around the neighbourhood to collect sweets. It is also said to be a night when spirits are roaming around.
