Malaysia is witnessing our own Katrina. The problem is not so much the flood, but the incompetence of the authorities to deal with crisis. People died not from natural calamity but the disarray or rather the absence of the rescue contingency.
Three days into the crisis, PM was still holidaying with his nice yacht, I supposed. I wonder he should sail the yacth around the flood zone. While people are suffering from lost of property, valuable items and homes, “no compensation” said Najib. That is extremely unfair to the poor folks. How and where they are going to get money to rebuild their lives?
Najib as the chairperson of the National Disaster Relief Committee, must acknowlege his full responsible for the rescue failure. At the same time, people are reluctant to give donation through Umno. This non-transparent means of handling the fund is deterring people from generously donate. During the Aceh tsunami, Indonesian TV advertized publically all donation would be audited by pretigeous accounting firms like Price Waterhouse and so on. We have never heard any of our public charity funds being audited. Until today, Malaysian tsunami fund is still in a mess.
Our country is lucky that we have not encountered large scale disaster. Our ’system’ totally incapable of managing a crisis. We cannot imagine how our contigency system respond to real crisis like volcano, earthquake or tsunami. What to do if we have an idiot prime minister and deputy prime minister who only know kiss babies in disaster.
