Workshop in Bangkok
Dec 29th, 2006 by Tian
I took a quick trip to Bangkok for a training organized by ICEM. Bro. Yoon who is the project coordinator of ICEM Asia-Pacific invited Labour Resource Center to join the workshop on international labour standard. The one-day workshop was prepared for the trade union of the Thailand Chemical Industry.
I was asked to do an one-hour session. I had a good sharing with our Thai brothers and sisters in the unions. The Thai Chemical Industry is a state-owned enterprise, which produces cheap generic drugs for the public health system.
Like many other places, the unionists have grave concerns with the trend of out-sourcing and subcontracting. Thai labour movement as a whole is also concerned with the lack of political representation of labour. They were eager to hear our experience in Malaysia, and to exchange ideas how unions could expand their political influence.
After the workshop, went to the office of the Center for Labour Information Service and Training (CLIST) to do some work. The center is the sister organization of LRC. Sitting behind me, was CLIST director, Somyot who is an old friend; on computer was Yoon.
