NUBE Conference
Jan 6th, 2007 by Tian

National Union of Bank Employees (NUBE) held its 1st Extraordinary Delegates Conference on Saturday 6 January. This is the first official gathering the union delegates since the suspension of the union some 6 years ago.
The NUBE leadership decided to invite the ex-Finance Minister Anwar Ibrahim to officiate the conference on the evening of 5 January. It was a grand event. Some 400 delegates came together. The openning dinner was also attended by representatives of bank unions in the region: Singapore, India, Indonesia, Taiwan and Sri Lanka. NUBE under the leadership of J Soloman has taken a lot of courageous moves. They have been firmed when defending the rights of members and dealing with employers. The invitation to Anwar will surely cause another stir. But the members responded with Anwar’s message enthusiatically.
Anwar spoke of the modern robbery in the name of deregulation or privatization. Compared to the old feudal robbery which normally occurs once a year, the modern cronies and corrupted politicians rob with more sophiscated tools such as toll, taxation, levies, etc. With these, they are robbing the people dialy and more heavily.
