Malaccan veteran passed away
May 13th, 2007 by Tian
Liu Jin Cheng (刘金城), a veteran political activist in Melaka passed away on Friday 11 May 2007.
Liu was a local leader of Parti Buruh and had been detained under ISA in 1960s. He later joined PRM until the merger. He became Parti Keadilan Rakyat Deputy Chief of Melaka state liaison committee after the merger. Unfortunately due to ill health he relinquished the post after 2004 General Election.
His health deteriorated in the last few months and he ceased to be active publicly.
Besides Parti Keadilan Rakyat, he was also very active in many associations related to education, workers and hawkers.
His funeral was scheduled on Saturday 12 May. I was not free to attend. So I went a night early (11 May) to visit the family.
Liu’s wife is currently in a state of ill health too. She has to go for dialysis 3 times a week. She was already asleep when I arrived at the house at about 20:30hr with Chen Yi, another KeADILan/ex-PRM leader. The couple has 2 children: a daughter and a son, both are now working and living overseas.
The passing away of old comrades reminds us the passing of time—my heart sunk heavily everytime I thought of the old generation is departing one after another. I felt time is running out to make our change fast enough to show our veteran fighters that their struggle is bearing fruits.
