After the flood, Kg Simpang Batu folks continued to battle for their right to land and habitat. Ahmad’s daughter said: “No problem we can survive flood, as long as we still have our kampong and our means of earning.”
“As long as we live here, we can continue to make tempe, to go on living.”
“We can’t survive if we lost our livelihood.”
On the morning of 13 June (Wednesday), barely two days after the flood, the kampong people gathered at Bukit Aman. Manivasagam, Pei Nei and I accompanied the Kampong people to submit a memorandum urging the police to investigate the manner of land seizure by DBKL.
There have been so many contradictory comments and accounts by various authorities in regard to the purpose of development. The residents are in the dark what project would in fact implemented. Their appeal for postponement to the demolition was not accepted by the city council.
