Dear Tian,
I’ve been reading your blog with great interest. Let me first say kudos to you for being strong in your principles when every other Malaysian (government henchmen?) are trying to cut you down to pieces. I think you must know which blog entry I’m referring to.
And I loved the twist in the end too.
Now back to why I’m posting here:
I’m a Malaysian studying overseas. I’ve been wanting to get registered as a voter but I don’t know how. My family is completely apathetic (they prefer to think that they are ‘politically-neutral’) towards politics. But I am not. For far too long I’ve stayed quiet. Now I want to protest with my vote. It doesn’t matter that the Opposition may not win the Elections. What matters is the Opposition knows that there are people who back them in what they do and continue to oppose sloppy governance.
So would you mind posting on your blog how Malaysians like me are able to get registered and possibly even vote from overseas?
Many thanks,
D
“Young voters: Make a difference!â€
ALL VOTERS, MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
It is a well known fact that older voters vote for the ruling coalition, come this election, we must also concentrate our efforts on the older generation!
Young voters, make your tomorrow!
have you tried contacting the Malaysian Embassy?
unfortunately, Malaysians living abroad can’t vote in the Embassy, unlike most democratic countries.
Dear lizwong,
Yes, the thought did occur to me. But I thought to check to see if I might have missed an online government website. For I had initially Googled phrases like “register Malaysian voter” etc. and nothing of significance popped up. (Btw, why do Msian government websites take an Ice Age to load??)
It will be really disappointing if what you said about voting from overseas is true.
Thank you for your reply.
I’ve nearly given up on Tian for a response until you showed up! lol
Hey guys..yes, I am a Msian in the US. Just confirmed with the Consulate General in New York that overseas Malaysians cannot register nor vote in overseas! Sad huh!
That’s why I plan to go back to register and hopefully able to VOTE in the next election!!!
Vote out the bad leaders….!!!
Hi,
I found this on the Electoral Commission website. I’m confused now. Why does it say that overseas students CAN vote from overseas?? So which is it? Yes or No?
I’ve contacted the Msian High Commission in Canberra, Australia and they don’t seem to know whether it is possible or not (How on earth could you not know the answer to such a basic question?) They recommended that I submit a copy of my IC and they will bring it forward to the EC for a response. I find that unacceptable. I deserve an answer, not play bureaucratic sleuth.
POSTAL VOTING
The postal votes are mailed, as early as possible, to electors who are entitled to vote by the postal vote method. Postal voters normally comprise personnel from the armed forces, Police Field Force, election officials on duty, government officers serving overseas, STUDENTS STUDYING OVERSEAS, and spouses.Postal votes must reach the Returning Officer by 5.00 pm on polling day. Proper procedures have been formulated to ensure the secrecy of the vote.
