MTUC Protest: Amendment to Industrial Ralations Act
Sep 7th, 2007 by Tian
MTUC will hold a public gathering on Saturday 8 September afternoon 14:30hr.
The gathering is to protest the amendments to Industrial Relations Act in the Parliament. The amendment was done in a rush and without consultation with the MTUC as well as the employers associations.
Among other things, the amendment limits the award given to workers who are sacked to not more than 24 months salary. As for probationary workers who are sacked, the amendment proposed that back pay that could be awarded should not exceed 12 months salary. The new law clearly put the employees in a disadvantaged situation under the current recessive economic climate.
The public rally also calls for the implementation of minimum wage and cost of living allowance (COLA).
The deputy minister Rahman Bakar has been making lots of noise against MTUC, and accusing MTUC of being the tool of the opposition parties. The government just too arrogant to take any criticism and it assumes people can’t think for themselves. If people protest, they are not acting for themselves but “didalang” by some external forces.
