Parliament broadcast
May 22nd, 2008 by Tian
A reader wrote to me last week (15 May). His comment was on RTM coverage on parliament session. His view should be taken into consideration by the Information Minister.
The following is his letter (edited):
Dear YB Tian,
…I am new to your blog. I have visited other more popular blogs…but most of them seem to be very clustered with a lot of things while some are rather commercialised. … I like your blog because it is simple and fuss free, clear and straight forward…perhaps a reflection of yourself I suppose.I was going to comment in your blog today (15 May) about my disappointment with RTM’s editing of the program ‘Parlimen Hari Ini’ which is aired at 11.30pm over TV1. As I work in day time and my office does not have a TV, I could not watch the 30 mins live telecast. Hence I make it a point to stay up late to watch excerpts of it at least.
The first few days were quite interesting with good coverage of both BN and Opposition MPs speeches. However, lately the program has been very disappointing. They only show a bit on the MP posting the question, either by BN or Opposition, but concentrated on lengthy replies by BN MPs only. For example, last night they showed a lengthy speech given by the DPM denying his alleged relationship with Mongolian murder victim Altantuya. I am sure there must have been lively debate or interesting questions posed before and after this speech but it was not shown at all.
I truly feel that airtime is being misused just to facilitate BN’s propaganda. The same with Rembau MP’s case, he gets so much airtime every time he speaks..I actually got quite sick and nauseous having to look at his face for such a long time. Come on, the program is only for a mere 30 mins so it must be really compact and the coverage fair to all who have spoken in parliament.
Almost all of the time they show boring and stupid speeches by BN MPs which is not only from a pre-prepared text but which any school kid can read from. There is also a segment every day which feature an interview with an individual MP on certain specific issues. As far as I can remember, all who got invited to speak this round were BN MPs. Watch one episode and you will know why I am feeling sick over the biasness. I think I will stop wasting my time and not stay up late just to watch this program anymore. I get a more clear picture and better informed through reading your blog and those of other Opposition MPs.
I strongly support that the entire session should be aired live over TV and the internet so that those of us who can’t watch TV during the day can at least catch some of it over the internet. Otherwise, they should air an uncensored or un-edited version later in the evening. But I think this is just wishful thinking as long as the current leaders are still around…sigh..
Do keep up the good work YB Tian. You have more supporters than you know out there. God bless you.

Have to agree with this. Even Ghapur Salleh of Kalabakan talked about being fair to both sides of the divide during the “prime time” of 30 mins live coverage. He echoed the sentiment that the same faces were being allowed to be seen on TV. The simple solution is to get the coverage extended for the whole session. Shabery Cheek take note. Let the people see the questions raised & the answers given. Allow the voters to see what their representatives are doing. For me, it has been an eye opener. I get to see who brings up intelligent issues and who answers sensibly. Obviously, we also get to see who the useless bums who always “buat kecoh”.
I know what happened..
Umnoputras finally realized that unbiased coverage were doing much damage to them and chickened out.
there’s a new party in town called ‘Keadilan 2′..come cek it out!visit blog sy!
Salam YB Tian,

Tian:
Let’s us wait. We have waited for many years for some one to expose, but nothing had happened.
Going by the general feedback, there is certainly a waste of tax payers money by having some ill-informed Ministers in the Parliament. These elected representative should be more conversant in their ministerial affairs and more presentable in the conduct of public speaking.
The nation needs more capable talents out there as the government machinery at its highest level seems to be lacking.
Dear Tian Chua
to digress a little from the above. Would like to pose the following questions:
a) Has the opposition brought up anything about the disastrous loss of Pulau Batu Puteh to Singapore?
b) what steps has the government taken to prevent future potential loss over territorial disputes such as these ?
c) What is your personal take on this?
As a Malaysian, I feel truly disappointed & saddened that an island that rightfully belongs to Malaysia can be so easily lost to a tiny dot like S’pore. Not because we are inferior or less smart. Our only mistake was to have nincompoops represent us over 50 long years. We lost on technical grounds & the fact that we are not proactive enough in defending our rights . While the bozos were internally bickering & busy filling their pockets, Singaporeans were actively staking their claim over Pulau Batu Puteh, ie. building communication towers etc. Talking about defending so called sovereignity, but can’t even manage to defend an island the size of football field!
The worst thing is that the minister involved proclaimed it a “win-win” situation for Malaysia. Win my foot! All we got was 2 tiny rocks in the South China Sea. Does he think us as idiots?
The irony is that all this could have been prevented had we taken the right step in protecting our rights.
Pls feedback . TQ
