The Great Divide
May 28th, 2008 by Tian

A new landmark for Malaysian Parliament.
After a few days of debating on the Supplementary Supply Bill, this morning (28 May 2008) the Parliament proceeded to vote on the bill.
Before the voting, the floor was debating expenses for Le Tour de Langkawi, the Champion Youth Cup (CYC) soccer matches, etc. MPs from the opposition criticized the wastage.
Pasir Mas MP Ibrahim Ali started the attack on the mismanagement of Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL). I joined in, asking whether any evaluation had been done to assess the financial and social gains from the annual event.
After a heated debate, a vote on the bill was to be taken.
KeADILan MP was not satisfied with the “ayes” and “nays” vote. We decided to call for a division.
I stood up to ask for a division. This was supported by the party whip Azmin Ali, after consulted Kit Siang, he too stood up to call for a division.
The Deputy Speaker Wan Junaidi hesitated, but more than 15 Pakatan Rakyat MPs stood up to support the division.
The act of standing had made history. While BN MPs shouting “wasting of time”, the Deputy Speaker pressed the bell for division.
It was amusing to see BN ministers rushing back to fill the empty chairs. The PM was among the first to rush in.
Najib was late, among missed his vote as the division had been counted when he walked in. Our Education Minister Hishamudin lost his vote as he was the last to come in.
The final count: Support 92, against 60 and 1 abstention.
It was a great moral victory for Pakatan Rakyat. Although we didn’t successfully block the bill, the government received a serious warning. We also had all MPs’ stance recorded. We had all MPs who supported the government wastage recorded, let them justify to their own constituency.
After the division, many BN MPs even congratulated us for the move. They were also happy to see this as a good exercise to keep the ruling parties on their toes.
Congratulations. -amb
I have a very serious problem with my latest ‘engagement’
Not knowing exactly where to wear my engagement ‘ring’
When I get such an open offer to be engaged to the ‘government’
I’m not too sure if this is another ‘national service’ or ’sting’?

Bravo !! this is what Parliament is all about and needs to be put into practice more often than not considering Parliamentarians are paid allowances - if memory serves me correct RM200 per day not including other perks and benefits- and these are all tax payers money - so by right MPs should be present unless they are occupied by other pressing matters or responsibilities ! the old method based on ‘lebih suara’ should not be practised any longer instead vote based on division method should be used - and it should also be practise at the Senate ! - then Malaysian Parliament would be a first world Parliament but still the quality of debates are still below quality level- especially by some MPs - … especially from the BN - so shape up or ship out dude !! that’s the game plan for this term.
Hi ,
I believe the PR in parliament are doing a great job keeping the BN opportunists a horrid session. That’s right fellows breathe down their neck and make them run away from………..
Dear YB Tian Chua, I am curious to know what happened to the remaining 21 (82 - 60 - 1) opposition MPs as well as the circumstances behind the single abstention. Any insights, kind Sir?
YB Tian Chuan.
Yesterday Najib said no more subsidy to RapidKL.
Today is last day parliment sitting.
How much RapidKL and anybody benefit? with nothing improved on KL transport problem.
Now please query him-because last year when announced on fuel increase Goverment will safe RM4 billions and to used for transport upgrading and improvement.
Now what he is going to do with RM4 billions??? Does he think people’s money can be use as his like??
Please address this issue and ask goverment to used RM4 billions to solve rising cost of rice/flour/chicken/cooking oil etc.
Ask him how to deploy/implemennt, what is time-line, what is target group and what is expected result. SHould does not materialised what is Plan B or C and soforth.
Gone are the days when people can do what they like and when they like. If nothing else, the rakyat is getting value for their taxes. Well done and keep the pressure up. Show the little emperors the rotan.
YB Tian Chua,
Been following your blog but this is the first time I am writing in. First of all, congratulations on a job well done so far in the first parliament session. Please keep up the good and may Pakatan Rakyat continue to fight and protect the rights of the rakyat.
Secondly, I agree with Encik Ahmad above that you should question the relevant minister on the RapidKL issue as well as the other issues affecting the rakyat brought up by him.
Thirdly, please remember to submit your questions for the next parliamentary session as the failure to submit questions may reflect badly on your service to your constituents. By the way, I believe the deadline is June 2, 2008 (Monday).
Thank you again and keep up the good work that you have done thus far.
Bravo to Pakatan Rakyat…way to go YB! PR must within a very short time do what they have to do…keep pushing aggressively..strike while the iron is hot..PR has to show to the Rakyat that they are both brawn and brains…give the snakes sleepless nights!
I feel like doing a cart-wheel! Yes! Yes! Yes!
I too am curious to know what happened to the remaining 21 (82 - 60 - 1) opposition MPs as well as the circumstances behind the single abstention. P sittings are getting more and more interesting and thanks to people like you.
Just to make a request again, have you got someone to look into the Rainbow Garden entrance issue on the vacated stall grills? Also on the rubbish at Jln Gopeng? and at the side kerb just in front o f the mamak stall next to the spare parts shops? Please do something about it. Or at least tell us what to do….
Dear YB,
This is why I always believe opposition must be strong. I even prefer the ratio to be 50:50 no matter who are the one running the show. Key point - “Check and Balance”.
HARGA MINYAK NAIK
YB,
TQ
yg benar,
rakyat yg terbeban!
Basically I do understand the rational behind on recent petrol price incress which means the goverment is less subsidice the petrol for the public. how are the goverment going to use the extra money to benefit the people or are the goverment going to use the extra money to bail out ailing goverment company ie RapidKL?
Secondly even petrol price is RM2.70, to a Sigaporene it is still cheap after the convertion rate may be it is only 1.30 sing dollar. So we are still subsiding the Singaporene registered vehical if ther are going to pump up the vehical in Malaysia . Why goverment cannot control the feul pricing for singapore vehical ?
Tahniah YB. You can see how absurb and stupid the socalled Abdullah’s cabinet. I believe ini baru permulaan saya dan bayangkan sekiranya PR members betul2 hentam mereka. Kemungkinan most will ‘pee’ dalam seluar. Sekian dan selamat berjuang.
