I have written a piece for Watan in its first print this week, with the hope that Watan not only revives its critical reporting and analysis feature back in the 1980s, but could be even spicier in the country’s current political climate.
Watan to hit the streets Saturday
By LOONG MENG YEEKUALA LUMPUR: Watan, one of the four newspapers with their permits revoked during Operasi Lalang in 1987, will be back on Saturday after it was granted a permit on Aug 1 from the Home Ministry.
“It is good to be back. Most of us in this new team are former journalists in Watan. We miss our readers and I think, our readers miss us too,” said Watan editor Zabidi Saidi.He added Watan will re-emerge as a weekly tabloid, to be called Mingguan Watan, instead of the daily of yesteryear. The other newspapers also affected in the 1987 permit revocation were The Star, Sin Chew and The Sunday Star. The other three publications had regained their permits over the years.
Watan also managed to get its permit back in 1988. However, the paper folded in 1996 owing to poor sales.
Zabidi said the first print of 3,000 copies would be made available in newsstands nationwide. He added that Mingguan Watan would be vocal and accommodate different news both from the ruling and opposition parties.
“Our paper will provide space to all. Since we cannot compete with the dailies for breaking news, our reports will be more analytical pieces and commentaries.
“We invite politicians to send their articles. For instance, in this first print, PKR information chief Tian Chua has written a piece for us,” said Zabidi.
Zabidi said the new management put in a application to the Home Ministry in May and was given the good news on Aug 1.

our PM and his associates have already declared to the whole world we malaysian youngsters 23yrs age r so weak phisically that even grandpas can overpower them phisically ( with so much of ease) how can we expect any medal from olympic games? D`nt you think our PM is wasting money by sending malaysians to olympics?

‘Welcome back Watan’ from me too. I remember reading the paper way back in the 80s when I was honing my Bahasa Malaysia writing skills.
And welcome back Tian. Missed your ariticles when you went quiet for so long. Incidentally, I noticed a drop in contributions to other blogs too. This must be somewhat due to fear from the RPK case where there was a threat to RPK to reveal the identity of those who contributed to his blog.
We must not be intimidated by such bullies. For 50 years we have been bullied and intimidated, isnt that enough? Now we finally found our guts to stand up for our rights, our future, our children’s future…and done it in style on March 8. Let us march on boldly everybody!

1. Is it possible that DSAI wins the Permatang Pauh elections and become the next Chief Minister of Penang as a stepping stone to becoming Prime Minister?

I’m surprised that neither any of my long trusted newsagent, Mohammed nor Mutu was able to get hold a copy for me despite assuring them that it hit the newsstands as reported. Is it that difficult to find Watan out there? Any suggestions? Anyone?

I’m beginning to suspect whether PKR can stand up to their promise to be a true multiethnic party. WHY IS THERE NO ACTION TAKEN AGAINST ZULKIFLI??? Petronas Mid Term Finance report,waktu itu dari wajah air muka
dia ternampak begitu gembira,but after that berubah menjadi
bengis,apa yg ingin saya nyatakan disini ialah beliau mengatakan
(every single cent we make,they want to take away from us no
matter wat they used to be) adakah ia dilemparkan kpd PR? or
to (UMNO&BN) gang kroni,jika YB merasakan ia sebenarnya kpd
(UMNO&BN) dalam maksud yg tersirat saya harap YB dpt terima
email saya secepat mungkin,2hari lagi utk kempen sebelum hari
pengundian,saya amat berharap YB dpt jadikan ini sebagai salah
1 slogan utk kempen!
kelmarin ialah hari utk pegundian Pos,x pasti if (UMNO&BN) akan
membuat sesuatu kerna x ada siapa yg tahu,ada 1 perkara lagi

mengapa saya begitu kerana pernah terjadi fenomena ini pada
Pilihan Raya Negeri Sarawak 2006 yg lalu di salah 1 kerusi adun
di SIBU,salah seorang Menteri Kabinet Sarawak yg bernama
(DATUK SERI WONG SOON KOH) dari (SUPP) telah mengatur
1 rancangan utk menahan kereta yg menghantar kotak punyai
kertas undi ke rumahnya,x ingat siapa lawannya waktu itu,kalau
bukan dgn cara taktik kotor sebegini,belum tentu beliau akan
menang kerusi tersebut&besar kemungkinan kalah besar!
di Sarawak sudah berlaku,cuma saya risau fenomena ini bakal
menular atau akan digunakan cara yg sama oleh (UMNO&BN) di
pilihan raya kecil Permatang Pauh nanti,kami disini begitu harap
(Datuk Seri Anwar) menang,seperti yg beliau nyatakan bahawa
bukan selalu punyai peluang&bukan selalu beliau diusia muda!
