A shocking news reached me on my way to Parliament this morning (17 Dec). Syafiq (Suara Keadilan photo journalist) called: “Syukree passed away!”
What? I was with him at Rawang Police Station until early morning yesterday! I was unsure what caused his death.
Syukree Hussain was a young man (28) who used to work with Suara Keadilan. He was originally from Terengganu. He was the first journalist we recruited for Suara Keadilan online when the website was launched more than a year ago.
He stopped work some time around BERSIH rally for health reasons. He returned to join Suara Keadilan again about two months ago. Unfortunately he was constantly agonized by psychological stress. At the end, he was asked to stop work.
This morning, Syukree left quietly in his sleep. He probably passed away at 9 morning. His family members only discovered his death when Syafiq phoned at 9:30hr.
Syukree was a dedicated and brilliant activist. Although a strong opinionated, He worked fast and wrote very well. He was strong minded and creative in his own way. (see his video made recently)
However, the young man was struggling to cope with challenges at the crossroad of our era. I sensed that he was trying to reconcile with many contradictions in life. His writing revealed his anxiety with big issues like religion, politics, philosophy, etc. His mind became the battlefield of these conflicts.
Sukyree led a colourful and productive life—and had certainly left among his circle of friends a lasting mark in their memory. His pains and dilemma too had stirred us emotionally. His silent cries impel us to look into the inner self of our generation of troubled youth. His departure also reminds me: their agile life can be so fragile too.

this is really shocking for me…the last conversation I had with him before i left for tokyo was very long and deep at mydin..most people thot he was a lost cause but my thot was he is disturbed and needed a listener and a friend. he promised me he will say sorry to those he offended and he kept to his words. he actually ended up asking forgiveness from his friends and deleted some of the contents that was offensive in his blog. My last sms was to thank him for doing that and that we will continue to debate on life and religion in a healthy way..farewell my friend…May Allah bless his soul…
al fatihah
