More defence scandals
Mar 18th, 2009 by Tian

It is wrong to think that Defence scandals confine only to submarine, Eurocopter, Sukhoi, and big-time weapons.
Today I held a press conference in the lobby of the Parliament to expose more scandals in awarding Defence contracts. Last week, I received a written answer from the Ministry of Defence revealing that in 2008 54% of the RM8 Billion worth contracts had been awarded through direct negotiation.
The justification for direct negotiation was due to secrecy and sensitivity of national security. However here is a case that required high level secrecy:
One the favorite recipients of contracts is a guy named Syed Abu Hussin Bin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal. I found out that he is a loyal member of Umno from Bukit Gantang division (Membership no.: 00924477).
My search also found that he has been a director or share-holder of some 30 companies. Nearly 90% of contracts involving the supply of various items and rations to the Defence Department were awarded to his companies.
I presented to the reporters a list of these contracts. Here I just want to cite two examples:
a. Komantra Sajian Sdn Bhd was awarded through direct negotiation a privatisation project of food catering to the Armed Force (ATM) for Northern and Eastern Zones of Peninsular Malaysia. The contract cost taxpayers RM600 million.
b. GPB Coporation Sdn Bhd was given a RM300 million contract for bus transportation to service National Service training.
I don’t want to go into the issues of the quality of the services. I have also received a lot of complaints from members of our Armed Forces over the food quality and other supplies.
We have no doubt some hanky panky is going on here. I think Pak Lah didn’t have much time to go into the details in the Defence Ministry. However I call on him to at least set up an independent inquiry to audit the Defence spending and contracts.
Let the games begin. Now we can see the can of worms open up. More of such release of information would be good so that the public can demand a special commission be set up to reveal the mechanics behind all these direct negotiated deals. This is all the Rakyat’s money and I am sick and tired of seeing them go to waste.
A high ranking Army Officer, a Public Servant and a neighbour, owns two Mercedes… one brand new
Figure that out
i believe the status quo will remain: the big shots will not rock the boat unless they want to. sad but true.
I can imagine not just a can of worms here… but a hangar-sized warehouse full of rusty cans with wriggling things hidden within.
Hi, Tian. This is a good exposé and you are doing a fine job as an MP.
While many of these lower-profile cases eventually get forgotten, may I suggest that all details of any case of any magnitude should be put online. It’s a small step to force-create transparency. And, we never know, making as much info online and with the great help of search engines, some day some good Malaysians may be able to research and piece together a larger scandal to be exposed.
remember those good days when the defence ministry paid RM 5 for a pack of maggie mee? Did the auditor general who exposed this scandal, resulted in any legal action being taken again this over-priced item? I hope the all caring and concerned citizens of this rich land demand an explanation from the authority.
great news mr tian chua. go for it
The corruption roots of UMNO had rot to the very bottom from the day Mamak kutty took over the reign. Its beyond repair and non reversible.
Congratulations for digging this mini fraction up. It’s a noble task. Keep up the good job and God Bless

Good on you Tian Chua its about time the public, sees how funds are really being allocated. We have been blind for too long. We need to see accountablity!
Hello,
300 million to transport NS trainees. no wonder deaths are just statistics to them. Lee Lam Thye, how do you sleep at night? I know you have resigned from the chair but werent you one of the staunch supporters of this murderous program.
tian, this malay is just a nominee. check it out and this will bear the thumbprint of someone very very close to Najib;in fact she sleeps with Najib, ok.
I guess it must be sensitive in nature because they don’t want us to know the poison they are putting in the food or the death traps they use to ferry our youths to their death camps.
I have personally seen the baggage compartment of a bus used to transport NS students from Tasik Cini back to KL burst open along the journey leaving a trail of bags along the highway.
When I was in the Malaysian Navy in 70s and 80s, we had pig foods served up 3 meals a day.
Rice: you could find cooked maggots
Margerine: at least a week old
Rice is of the lowest quality
Chicken: mainly bones, some one has got the meat
Beef or hard working kerbau: more rubberry than rubber
Choysum and sawi : cooked to dead and turned brown
Evening meal: always red fish. Pretty tough with no taste
oops I forgot to mention those fake orange juice, maggie mee, coffee. Only two things taste like the real thing are sugar and salt. Most of them are so diluted and bland. We use the orange juice to brush our teeth when we ran out of water on board those FSC( fast striking craft equiped with French Exocet Missiles). These fsc were meant to be out at sea for a day or two the most as they could not generate water for consumption and shower. The Hongleong shipyard built FPC were better. We were out at sea for weeks patroling the Sabah coast and the East Malaysin waters without having a decent showers. Very often the aircondition failed as well.
By the way, who are those toy soldiers featured in the above photo. They were wearing some bright coloured costumes. Can they fight to defend the country?? Just one more quetion, are they still using the ” canabalising technic that is pinching each other parts to make the ship seaworthiness before sailing??
tq yb for the good work.
tq 4 fighting evil 4 all of us.
u r chief, sir!
The poor are becoming poorer, the middle class are becoming poor and the elite are getting more and more loaded..no justification..no equality..keep up the good work Mr. Tian..
hi tian chua..i think he is the malay ultra..new malay who manage to dealt and handle thecontract personally and not even sub con to non bumi’s as theusuall malay contractor..bravo tuan syed…make the country and malay proud of you…we know you better then tian chua who just told people un truly stories behind the commitment and the malay succesfull entrepreneur..shame on malay for not realise their hero..
I’m sure if anyone care to go through each ministry, there will be “hangar-sized” (borrowing Antares term) of such deals. Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Information, not to mention the already famous misdeeds of Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Youths & Sports. comes immediately to mind. Someone once told me, that’s the reward one gets when they reach that level. Perhaps we may never see the day when prosecution, arrest or jail occur, but shaming, exposing and publicising it may be sufficient for now. Put it on the web, replicate it, and let everyone see it. The Rakyat will know what to do at the 13th GE.
Mr Chua you were chosen by the people in your constituency to represent and voice their views and opinion.I for one absolutely support your good job for exposing all the dirt which happen in MINDEF.PICTURES tells thousand stroies.Perhaps a pictorial evidence is very convincing to all who views it with open mind.I hope more readers will post the photos of corruption evidence alleged as the case of the senior Military Officers posted above who own two Mercedes Benz.As an ex Military officer I know how much they earn and whether it is within their mean to own 2 Mercedes Benz.
Dig out more of these ’scandals’ and ‘irregularities’…….someday Rakyat Power will prevail.
The nation is not far from our neighbour in corruption. The cronies had them too good for too long. It’s time for a “Reformasi” for good or bad, something need to be done !!!!!!!
WHAT IS DONE IS DONE YB, DIRECT NEGO OR OPEN TENDER….BE IT!!!
BUT what is important the job done now. Just as brought up by your fellow parliamentarian sdr Lim, it is the screw up of the project that the contractor must be taken to task. Just look at Gong Kedak the RMAF base suppose to be the most strategic base – scary and all stinks!!! the Air Force, the contractor, Mindef civil servants and minister must be sacked for obvious reason for being irresponsible and placing the security of the nation at risk.
Just go and visit Gong Kedak for forensic audit and get someone in the know of how is the messed up of the base and the screw up of Sukhoi projects.
How come non of the mainstream media or Malaysiakini reported this new ? How to pursue from here ?
